Description[]

American Flyer is an American company specializing in S-gauge trains, currently existing in name only as Lionel, LLC's brand name for their S-gauge offerings. The origins of the brand date back to 1906, where Illinois-based toymaker William Hafner and his friend and business partner William Coleman began producing toy trains for the Edmonds-Metzel Hardware Company using the company's excess manufacturing capability; the name "American Flyer" was adopted in 1908. The company was acquired by the Lionel Corporation in 1967.

Today the American Flyer name is used for Lionel's S-gauge semi-scale offerings, using similar technology to what is used on their LionChief, Ready-to-Run and Ready-to-Play products. A sub-series was planned in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hot Wheels. One known product was planned for this series but was not released as the product failed to meet Lionel's minimum order quantities in order for it to be produced; it is not known if other products were conceptualized.
