Description[]
A tender is a special type of rolling stock hauled by a steam locomotive. The tender carries a locomotive's fuel, whether it be coal, oil or wood, and water; as steam locomotives consume large amounts of water compared to their fuel supply, tenders are necessary to keep them running over long distances. Not all steam locomotives require tenders however; there are locomotives which carry all their fuel and water onboard the locomotives themselves. Numerous different types of tender designs exist, such as the Vanderbilt, slopeback and whaleback; some types of tenders were associated with different railroads.
The tender can be found lettered for the Santa Fe, numbered 5678; it is meant to be attached to an 0-6-0 steam locomotive. While the Santa Fe did own 0-6-0s, this is not a prototypical number for any of the known classes of 0-6-0s owned by the railroad. The number 5678 was however used on an actual locomotive in the Santa Fe's roster, with an EMD SD45-2 carrying the number. This is the only piece of rolling stock without any additional features.
