Description[]
Deep Space 2 was a set of two NASA probes intended to be the first probes to penetrate the surface of another planet, in this case being Mars. The idea was for the probes to be launched from the Mars Polar Lander and plummet to the surface of Mars with only an aeroshell system and no parachute. Both probes landed on Mars apparently without incident, but no communications could be established after the impact on 3 December 1999; some months later the mission was declared a failure, with the board concluding that the reason for the failure was the inadequate testing of the probes prior to their launch. Shortly after the failure of the Deep Space 2 probes, the Mars Polar Lander itself was lost; it has not been found to this day.
