Successor to the Ford Cortina and precursor to the Ford Mondeo, the Ford Sierra's rounded styling was controversial, earning the nickname "jelly mould" styling amongst the European public. Debuted in 1982, the casting Hot Wheels had acquired from Corgi, a British Toymaker purchased by Mattel in 1989. The casting is referred to as "Ford XR4Ti" on the packages from the late 1990s. However, the Corgi base distinctly says "Ford Sierra 2.3 Ghia" and the Hot Wheels versions also bear the designation. The 2.3 Ghia version was the precursor to the XR4Ti, launched in 1984. The 2 models can be distinguished by the bodies, the XR4Ti was a 2-door model with a rear spoiler and the 2.3 Ghia being a 4-door model lacking a spoiler.
