The EMD GP40 is a four-axle diesel locomotive manufactured by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors from 1965 to 1971. Manufactured mainly for freight usage, the GP40 was a longer derivative of its predecessor the GP35 and can be distinguished by the three large radiator fans at the rear of its long hood. Production of the GP40 was discontinued in 1971 after 1,221 were produced, with an improved version, the GP40-2, entering production; the GP40-2 featured a modular electrical system and some minor exterior changes and was produced until 1986, with 1,143 produced.
The GP40 Diesel can be found lettered for the Chessie System, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the Canadian Pacific Railway, numbered 2479, 3980, and 5510 respectively. While both the Chessie System and Rio Grande owned GP40s (specifically GP40-2s), neither of them features an accurate number to their real life counterparts. Canadian Pacific also never owned any purchased-new GP40s and the real CP 5510 is an SD40. A button on the roof can be pressed for an engineer figure to poke out the side of the diesel and "walk" down the side walkways. The Canadian Pacific GP40 is a Canadian exclusive.
