The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail variable sweep wing fighter aircraft produced by Grumman Aerospace Corporation and operated by the U.S. Navy and Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, the Tomcat's sole export customer. The Tomcat entered service with the U.S. Navy on 22 September 1974, acting as an air superiority fighter, interceptor and as a multirole fighter. The Tomcat was retired from U.S. Navy service on 22 September 2006, being superseded by Boeing's F/A-18E and F Super Hornets; Tomcats are still active with the IRIAF. Tomcats were produced from 1969 to 1991; a total of 712 were produced.
The livery on the F-14 is based on BuNo 160665 when it flew with VF-1, the Wolfpack, in Top Gun. This casting features a functioning variable sweep wing; this works in a very similar way to how the wings on the Airuption open.
