Officially, Jaguar began in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company. The fledgling enterprise produced cars using parts and subassemblies from several British manufacturers. This production technique limited their ability to effect styling and performance, so in 1935 Swallow produced its first car from the ground up. Their new car needed a name that embodied speed and agility, and Jaguar fitted the bill. In '37 the chrome mascot was added to the hoods and Jaguar was on its way to becoming a premier manufacturer of luxury sports cars.
