Description[]
The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II was a tuned version of the W201 produced by Mercedes-Benz in collaboration with Cosworth from 1990 to 1991. A further evolution of the previous Evolution I model, the Evolution II featured most of the features of the preceding model, such as the same short-stroke M102 2.5L inline-4 fitted with the AMG PowerPack; the car now featured a "radical" body kit designed by Richard Läpple, a professor at the University of Stuttgart, giving the car a larger adjustable wing and a rear-window spoiler. The wing was useful in increasing downforce and reducing drag, having been wind tunnel tested to that effect.
An anecdote of the time says that BMW R&D chief Wolfgang Reitzle commented that "the laws of aerodynamics must be different between Munich and Stuttgart", and if that wing worked like how it was intended to, "they had to redesign their wind tunnel"; this anecdote also claims that BMW actually did redesign their wind tunnel. 502 were produced, in compliance with DTM homologation rules; allegedly, the production run had sold out before the car was even unveiled.
