The Porsche 917K was a highly successful sports prototype race car raced by Porsche in numerous iterations from 1969 to 1973. Designed by Hans Mezger, Helmuth Bott and Ferdinand Piëch, the 917 was developed to take advantage of rule changes and to give Porsche their first overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970. Developed in just ten months, the 917 was first shown off at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show; by the 1970s, Porsche had made a name for themselves and were dominating the sports car field. 12 917K chassis were produced.
This model features an opening engine cover, front hatch and butterfly doors. This model was created specifically for the Gran Toros line and was not featured in any of the original Mebetoys lineups; it was however later converted for use in the Mebetoys lineup after the Gran Toros line was discontinued.
