The perils of wiki-ing

Hi Nathan: I'm sorry you feel burned about the skin, man. You're right; that's the danger of collaborative editing -- you can work on something, and then somebody else comes along and changes it. Ultimately, you usually end up with something better than one person could do on their own... but it can be disappointing, too. I think that the skin that we have right now is kind of a nice combination of you, me and Scott -- your logo, 40th anniversary graphic and blue background, the red that I liked, and then a different blue background from Scott.

So I think we ended up with something cool, and it's something that all of us made together. -- Danny@fandom (talk) 21:37, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I gotta say that it looks great, guys! --HWC Mongrel 03:19, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Nathan

Hey Let me introduce myself. I was a designer at hotwheels from 2002 to 2004 and thought I could help you out with some of this stuff. My name is Dwayne Vance. I don't really know how to add all the cool stuff you did. So let me know what I can help with. Just contact me through my email on my website Dwayne FutureElements

Skin

Yay, the new skin is awesome! I love the 40th anniversary logo and the glow around the Hot Wheels logo. I'm going to ask my colleague Scott to stop by and see if he can add anything. This is great -- I'm glad it looks nice, in time for the Nationals! -- Danny@fandom (talk) 20:00, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey Danny,
I'm glad you are liking the new look. It was quite the task getting the codes figured out. I had to visit many other Wikis and match the colors to what had changed on their sites. There sure are a lot of ways to change the same feature. A whole lot of weird coding too for skins and shading too.
If Scott has a chance I have a couple of things I could not figure out how to work.
Can the main ad banner be moved to the left so the 40th Ann. logo is uncovered?
The little windows on the sides are the Widgets correct? If so, what controls their coloring? Some of the sites I went to list widget "a" one color, widget "b" something else.
What controls the main body's coloring? I'd like the border around the main section to be orange also if possible.
Is there a way to title and stack the .css so it is easier to tell what does what? I tried adding extra text and it messed things up. Sort of box in the stuff for changing the main header then the widget parts, etc.-- Maelstrom610 20:18, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
I'll ask Scott to come by and help out -- He's been busy with another wiki lately, but I'm gonna get him over here. :)
I don't think we can mess with the ad placement -- that's beyond our powers. The 40th anniversary logo fits really well if you're looking at the site with a large browser window... But for a smaller screen, it's going to get covered up. I think that'll be the case no matter what we do ith the ad. -- Danny@fandom (talk) 20:47, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Hey Danny,
So far I've been able to change out what I've needed. Even found some more things to change then I was looking for. I've been able to change the ad banner's location too. It has shoved it over towards the center exposing the 40th Ann logo better.Maelstrom610 03:03, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi, the skin looks great! It looks like you found what you were looking for, but let me know if you have any questions. There's also this excellent guide. —Scott (talk) 17:04, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Nathan -- I was playing around some more with the skin. The orange was kind of getting to me, so I went for a bolder red / blue / purple look. I don't know if this really works either. :) What do you think? -- Danny@fandom (talk) 15:58, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Danny,
I'm not sure the new colors are working for me at the moment. It seems too dark and doesn't match the header's gradient up top. Would you mind if I change the borders and top bar back? It would be the orange or a less bright orange again. Not a fan of the purple 8) The orange was done to keep the HW color theme as a race track around the boders of things. The new red for the headers is cool and not as bright, I like that. The backgroung blue is a good start as I planned to change it from gray but ran out of time. What changes the text's colors at the very bottom of the page? They are lost in the background color at the moment. Maelstrom610 20:31, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, it was too dark. I changed it back, and brought in the red on the headers. I think my main issue is the gray and orange combo. I thought purple might be cool, because purple is/was a very collectible Hot Wheels color. Anyway, we can keep playing. I've been using this Color Codes page to find more colors... What do you think? -- Danny@fandom (talk) 20:52, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry that you had to revert the work you've done. I have no problem with the color purple, it was just the first thing I saw when I came back to the site. It seemed out of place to me. Haha that is the site I've been using for the color codes too. It's very detailed! I've posted on the .css talk page of where I'm stuck with the background color. I too do not like having the background gray as it does not the orange pop too much. Maelstrom610 02:44, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
No problem, it's all part of the wiki process. :) I figured out the code for the text at the bottom -- I posted it on the Monaco.css talk page. We'll get there eventually. -- Danny@fandom (talk) 16:54, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Casting template

Hi, Nathan -- Thanks for helping to clean up all the castings templates today! It looks like between you, me, Scott and Phillip, we got all of them done. What do you think of the new box? I'm happy to get all that white space off the page, and bring the Versions table up... -- Danny@fandom (talk) 00:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Good call on changing the format as there was a lot of blank space. For a while there too many of us were trying to edit the Sandbox list of pages needing to be fixed. I'd get that error of the page being changed since I left my edit open to knock off finished car. It looks to be done now so hopefully that mass edit will not need to be done again for a while. :)
Maelstrom610 01:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I added a column to the castings template to include the toy #. I figured this would be important, as there are no 2 numbers alike for that reference. Also, I noticed that you changed some of my wheel posts, that I had done. I was just trying to get something a bit shorter, but I will do what is considered more universally accpeted. When I add or make changes, I will be sure to use the format you prefer, IE: Black 5 Spoke. Thanks. Hwmadman2k 01:40, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Rockin' the block

Hi, Nathan -- You blocked your first vandal! Congratulations, it's a rite of passage. :) It's always a good sign when the vandals and spammers show up -- it means people are actually looking at the site.

I re-blocked the guy infinitely. Some wikis like to do three-day blocks and give people another chance. I think that's cute for a big wiki where you've got tons of people patrolling all the time. For a small wiki like this, where it's just us, I think we don't have the time to be kind to spammers. So we can do infinites. -- Danny@fandom (talk) 22:04, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey Danny - Yeah that guy was on a roll. The page title 9 was something about being happy to achieve that goal. Do these attacks happen often on other Wikis? Also, how would have I been able to go back and ban him longer? I planned on doing so after catching all of his other topics. I'm not lenient either to spammers or trolls after working on other message board sites. Shutting them down permanently is the only option.
One of the things this guy did was a redirect to another member's username page. Would that have deleted the member if the redirect wasn't caught when removing the page? Maelstrom610 02:17, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Vandals and spammers happen every once in a while. If the wiki is run well, then it's easy to clean up and block them. That's part of the reason why we leave talk messages for every new user -- when you see a red "talk" link on Recent changes, that means it's a brand-new user, and you know to go check out what they're doing.
The more active admins we have on the site, the easier it is to catch this stuff early and deal with it. So I'm really glad you're an admin, and it'll be great to recruit more as the site keeps growing.
And sorry -- I didn't tell you how to do an infinite block! The longest time listed in the drop-down menu is 1 year, but you can also select "other" in the menu, and then type "infinite" in the blank space.
Deleting the redirect wouldn't have messed up anything with the user's page... You can delete a redirect the same way that you do any other page -- it only affects that redirect page. Also, if a vandal moves a page to another place -- like taking my user page and renaming it "Big Jerk" or whatever -- then you can move it back, and delete the redirect from "Big Jerk".
The good news about all of this stuff is that there's absolutely nothing that a vandal can do to permanently damage a wiki. We can always revert changes, delete spam pages, and move pages back. And there's nothing that you can do to accidentally damage it either -- even if something gets deleted by accident, it's still saved and we can "undelete" it. So, no worries! -- Danny@fandom (talk) 17:33, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

New heading

Hey, I love the new heading you made for the front page! I swapped it out for the other box by changing Template:Maintop. That's really cool. -- Danny@fandom (talk) 17:46, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Redirects and deletes

Hi, Nathan -- I saw your request to delete Country Club Muscle. Instead of deleting it, I turned it into a redirect by replacing the text on the page with #REDIRECT CCM Country Club Muscle. Now if anybody links to Country Club Muscle, that link will automatically redirect them to the correct page. That also works in the search box -- so if you search for country club muscle, you'll get to the correct page.

Also, if you hit the "move" button and rename the page, then it'll automatically create a redirect from the old page name to the new page name.

I also just gave you admin access, so you can delete pages when you need to. Let me know if there's anything else you're trying to figure out how to do... -- Danny@fandom (talk) 22:07, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the promotion and tips on the redirect! That will come in handy when switching pages of cars that have multiple names. The only issue I'm having at the moment is creating and adding to the categories.
The newer one I tried to make was for Bob Rosas Designs so it would show up with the other designers.
Out of curiosity, does Wikia have a mass link type option? It would be cool if there was a program that would automatically link out terms and names in all the different pages created.
Say I put "ZAMAC" in this master linker deal. Then it will find and link the first time the word appears in the text of other HW Wikia pages. With all the different times cars are used, it going to be a task to try and link stuff together.
The other inquire would be is a way to see what is linked to a specific page? That could also help find holes .
Thanks,Maelstrom610 03:01, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Sure, I can help with those things. :) You've got the category tag on Bob Rosas right. The next step is: Click on the red category link, and it'll take you to the category page. On that page, add and save the page. That'll add Bob Rosas Designs as a subcategory of Hot Wheels by Designer. Putting the |Rosas at the end means that it'll alphabetize it under R for Rosas on the list.
Mass linking is harder... Somebody could potentially write a little bot program, but it may just be easier to do the search and replace by hand. There is a "what links here" function -- check out the toolbox under the navigation on the left. There's a link that says "what links here", and that'll show you all the pages that link to the page you're currently on. That's a very useful function -- now that you know it's there, you'll use it all the time.
So what else can I tell you? -- Danny@fandom (talk) 05:19, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
So that is how its done. Thanks, I'll make the change. On the What Links Here, I figured that was just part of the home page menu. Good to know it would have worked on all the pages.
I'm sure I'll come up with other questions later on. Thanks for the help,Maelstrom610 05:57, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Designer pages

Hi, Nathan -- I like the designer pages that you've been creating! Those don't need to live on the category pages -- I created pages for Steve Moran, Mark Jones and Alec Tam.

You can create a separate page for each designer, and then add it to the top of the category list, like this: . The pipe and the extra space means that the article is listed under " ", which puts it at the top of the list. That probably makes no sense, the way I've written it, but you'll see what I mean when you click on the category. :) -- Danny@fandom (talk) 14:38, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey Danny,
Thanks for the compliment and help with making them work correctly to look good.
I fully understand where you're going. I've been adding the page to the menu basically. So creating a
unique page and calling its tag nothing will put it above any other article posted under the Main :Category. Cool
Thanks,Maelstrom610 19:14, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Great job!

Loving all the work that you're doing, Nathan! Keep it up!! --HWC Mongrel 06:02, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm happy to help. I look up to those guys so I'll gladly do what I can to showcase their work in the best way possible. Like I said when I first saw the post, I've got a lot of plans to do so. It has been taking a bit longer then I figured due to not knowing Wikia codes (weird yet easy system after time), gathering who did what, and getting the media together. Oh well, it will turn out good in the end!

One month till Nationals already too. Good time to gather more art for the sections!

Alignment issues

Hi! I saw that you were working on fixing the alignment on some of the pages, so that the table doesn't get cut off by the pictures.

The easiest way to do that is to use this code: <br clear="all">

As I'm sure you noticed, adding a lot of <br> tags is a pain -- and the spacing doesn't necessarily look the same on your screen as it will on a larger or a smaller screen. The clear="all" tag automatically creates the right number of spaces to fit your screen.

You can see how I used it on Cockney Cab II. Let me know if I can help you figure out anything else! -- Danny@fandom (talk) 20:16, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

I have a question for Maelstrom610, I think your name is Natham from what I gather. Am I to assume you're an administrator? If so, you'll be able to answer my question knowledgably. The first day I joined here, you advised me against making the thumbnail sizes 100px, as it threw off the column widths in the tables. Not only did I assume you had the right and wisdom to tell me this (which now I see that you do), it seemed like excellent advice, too. So I tried to go back to all the thumbnails I had changed to 100px and put them back to the original 75px that I remembered they had been at before I did anything.

My question is this: Did that very useful tip apply to only me or was it for the complete wiki and every thumbnail? Does it apply to every user? Because there is a user called AGENTAIR who thinks I'm harrassing him by changing them from 100px back to the original 75px. I'm only doing what I thought you told me was right and I think he's taking what I'm doing as a personal affront to him alone. What should I do about this? I only want to try and make it a better wiki with the things I add, but he even removes my pictures for no reason other than to put his back in which "match." He doesn't claim his picture is better - therefore an upgrade - only that it matches all his other ones on the particular page. See the page for 69 Dodge Coronet Super Bee to see what I'm talking about. If he has special privileges that I'm not aware of, please let me know and I will stop adding things when they're not wanted. I will await your advice. HaarFager 06:16, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Fclass

Hello. I just started the 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible page. I have the Hot Wheels Classics Series 4 version, but I'm not sure if it debuted there. Could you add ay extra info? Fclass 18:06, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

The Since 68 version was first. I went ahead and added the missing info. Thanks for helping out the site!
Maelstrom610 02:47, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
The one I have has a green color. You're missing green. Fclass 17:24, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't see where a green one has been released yet of this car. My source is the South Texas Diecast website, so it's possible that there may be one out that they don't have listed yet.
I checked ebay and spotted the green one. Thanks for the tip. Also missed the newest Connect Car version. Feel free to add any missing info to the pages too. Maelstrom610 03:02, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Could you add the Hot Wheels Classics Series 2 colors for the '67 Pontiac GTO? Also, do you know of any other colors and series for the '70 Chevelle Convertible? Fclass 14:39, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Nathan

Hi Nathan,

My name is Doug, and I'm the owner of T-Hunted.com blog. I don't know if you know this blog, but it always shows first some cars that doesn't appeared in any part of the world, like today, that I'm showing a new Superized on my blog.

I'm very interested in those drawings you're using to show some models from 2012. I wonder if you have more on these, and in particular from one brazilian new car (I guess it's the Chevy Opala). If you can help me, my email is douglasf@mac.com and I'll appreciate your help! I can help you too with some pics I have for the 2012 line.

Thank you again!

Doug

Holy crap my name is nathan! :O Frostyboys 00:38, November 23, 2011 (UTC)frostyboys

Hi Doug, I check your site often for the latest. I'm not sure where the images are originaly coming from. I'd didn't post them and it looks like Frostyboys above me posted the pictures (Hello fellow Nathan). Feel free to upload images and information to anything you can.

I Bocked You By Mistake

I was trying to block somebody else and accidentally blocked you by mistake. I think I removed it correctly, but if I didn't please e-mail me and I'll try again. I apologise for any confusion this may have caused but this has happened before with me and I never catch my mistake until after I've done it. Plus, I'm a little out of practice here, so I'll have to get back into the swing of doing correct edits. Sorry about that! Kenny HaarFager 05:25, November 24, 2011 (UTC)

@*$! %^*# for blocking me! LOL I'm still here so you fixed it. Just don't delete me. Yeah Wiki has changed quite a bit and I'm still getting use to it too.

Rev Rod question

The Rev Rod's certainly got my attention. Not only does it look cool, but it was used by Rev in the Team Hot Wheels animated special to wreak havoc. Oh, and I tried searching for the toy on eBay, but I couldn't find it. They have it on the official Hot Wheels and it said that it's been collected at least 657 times. [1]

I don't know why they said that it's been collected 600+ times, and I couldn't find it on eBay. Why can't I find it? I tried checking Target; it ain't there. JustAlex93 (talk) 02:37, June 13, 2014 (UTC)

Rev Rod on eBay!!

Dude, I just saw the Rev Rod on eBay, and apparently, it is #125/250, not 87. At the moment, there are two people selling them! Here's a link to the search result: [2]

Dear Maelstrom610, I think I have an error you didn't mention in your Error Guide. I have the Night Burner Treasure Hunt from 2014 with a wheel missing the paint. Hello,

Thanks for the photo. This falls under the mismatch wheel color error type. The chrome wheel ended up in the wrong bin. Chrome and painted wheels use two differnt processes.
